Research identified the advance directive completion rates among adults to be between 1/4 to 1/3 of the population. However, contrast, advance directive or living will completion rates for young adults range between 2-15% of the population. Hamel, Wu, and Brodie (2017) found 87% of participants believed patients and families should have the biggest say in health care decisions, yet only 27% of them reported they had written documents stating their end-of-life wishes. Among that 27%, the participants under the age of 50 who had completed any kind of written document constituted less than 30% or about 8% of the total number  of participants (Hamel et al., 2017).
